Through coordination with Zone Executive Leadership (ZEL), Alberta Health, Office of the Medical Officer of Health, Population & Public Health, & other health service professionals, Laboratory Services is working to ensure the right test menu for programs delivered at various facilities.

Your Opportunity:
The Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre is located in the city of Wetaskiwin 70 km south of Edmonton. The Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre provides services to the residents of the city of Wetaskiwin, Wetaskiwin County and the four Bands of Maskwacis. The population catchment area is approximately 35,000. The hospital has 70 acute care beds and 107 long term care beds, and is the only collection site for community patients. Our site provides a busy and dynamic work environment for those who enjoy challenging their skills as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. This position is responsible for providing and performing the highest quality service possible to the clients of the clinical laboratory. This is done in an effective, efficient, and safe manner. Specifically, this position performs specimen procurement and processing including: ECG and Holter monitor testing, clerical duties, Quality Assurance practices (including tracking of missing specimens and reports), reporting errors/incidents using appropriate documentation and reporting results within the scope of activity of a Medical Laboratory Assistant. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Cardiology training and experience including ECG's and Holter Monitors. All blood collection procedures including: venipuncture, micropunctures, blood culture collection as well as collections on all patient ages including newborns, pediatrics and geriatrics. Equivalencies may be considered. Equivalency is defined as completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and/or Combined Laboratory and Xray Technologist (CLXT) program in Canada; completion of a Medical Lab Technician/Technologist program outside of Canada; and/or MLT or CLXT students who have completed their phlebotomy training/rotation. Applicants with a high school diploma may be considered. Upon hire, you will be required to complete on-the-job phlebotomy training provided by APL at no cost, and formal training courses offered by SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) or NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology). The costs associated with these formal training courses will be your responsibility. You will be required to complete these training requirements within your probationary period, as per the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) collective agreement.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum 2 years experience in a healthcare setting is preferred. Recent experience with Muse and Cardioday. Recent and relevant experience with Epic Beaker. Current registration with CSMLS. Ability to communicate effectively in English. Good organizational skills and ability to assume responsibility. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently and promote teamwork. Follows IPC practices and safe work habits.
